Laptop Buying Guide – What to Look For

Laptops have become essential for work, study, and entertainment. With so many options out there, picking the right one can feel a bit overwhelming. No worries, this guide will help you sort through the details and find the laptop that’s just right for you.

Choose the Right Laptop for Your Needs

Understanding Your Needs

The first step is… working out what you will mainly use your laptop for. That will help you narrow down what features and specs matter most.

  • Basic Computing: If you’re just browsing, checking emails, or typing up the odd document, go for a lightweight, affordable laptop with a decent processor and enough RAM.
  • Productivity: For spreadsheets, presentations, and Zoom calls, look for a laptop with a fast processor, plenty of RAM, and a clear, sharp display.
  • Creativity: Designers and video editors will need something with a powerful processor, dedicated graphics card, high-resolution screen, and lots of storage.
  • Gaming: Gamers need top notch graphics, a fast processor, loads of RAM, and a display with a high refresh rate.
  • Students: Portability, performance, and price matter. Get one with solid battery life for long days at uni or school.

Key Specs to Consider

Once you know what you need, focus on these key specifications. It is noted that the average joe may not know alot about computer specifications. however try your best to write them down and take them to your local retailer, they will match a laptop to your needs.

  1. Processor:
This is your laptop’s brain. For everyday stuff, an Intel Core i3 or AMD Ryzen 3 is fine. For more demanding tasks, go for an Intel Core i5 or i7, or an AMD Ryzen 5 or 7.
  2. RAM:
RAM handles multitasking. 8GB is minimum. But i would totally recommend 16GB. 32GB is better if you’re editing videos or gaming.
  3. Storage:
SSDs (Solid State Drives) are fast, quiet and can handle movement. Other terminology used is M.2 or nvme. 256GB is minimum and ok if you are not gaming or storing multimedia on the laptop (photos, music, videos). 512GB is the next best option. 1TB and 2TB are larger options if you are gaming or video editing. I would highly recommend you look at your current laptop and match the storage space being used.
  4. Display:
Screen size, resolution, and quality matter. For portability, 13-14 inches is ace. For immersive experiences, consider 15-17 inches. Full HD (1920×1080) or higher resolutions are sharper, and IPS panels give better colours and angles.
  5. Graphics Card:
Essential for gaming and creative work. Integrated graphics are fine for basics, but go for NVIDIA GeForce or AMD Radeon for more demanding needs.
  6. Battery Life:
If you’re on the go, aim for at least 8 hours of battery life.
  7. Operating System:
Choose between Windows, macOS, or Chrome OS based on what suits you best.
  8. Portability:
Travelling heaps? Ultrabooks are light and portable, perfect for moving around.
  9. Budget:
Set a budget and stick to it. Prioritise features that matter most.
  10. Brand Reputation:
Choose brands known for reliability and good customer support.
